Who/what is Cowbelly?
In short- 'Cowbelly' is me- Jamie Piper, a San Diego-based commercial animal photographer. That's me in the photo there with my late furkid Fergie (and some other adorable dog models, including a Pug that wasn't having my PDA, and an Akita that I photographed in the same place Sean Connery once got his haircut).
I've been photographing animals professionally since I launched my business 'Cowbelly Pet Photography' in Seattle in April '03. And I've been madly in love with dogs and cats since I was old enough to toddle.
From 2003-2015 I shot for a variety of private, commercial and editorial clients, traveled around the country teaching workshops to other photographers, road tripped for eight months with my dog, and also wrote a 350-page reference book for Wiley Publishing. Pet photographers around the world came to know me as simply 'Cowbelly'- hence the name.
In early 2015 I moved away from the private client work to focus exclusively on my commercial and editorial clients. My own work had become formulaic, and I needed to challenge myself with more diversity and greater variety. I've been shooting for international brands since 2008, and love the challenge of big productions.
My passion is to create authentic, joyful images that resonate and connect with a brand's customers in an intimate, familiar way.
My mission is to create images that motivate consumers to purchase products and services that help support and care for their beloved animal family members.
In short, I believe my job helps improve the lives of both pet owners and their animal companions. And that means everything to me.
